Diplomatic relations between the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Togolese Republic were officially established in 1973, marking the beginning of a long-standing partnership founded on humanitarian and diplomatic cooperation. This relationship was formalized with a Cooperation Agreement in 1978, followed by a Postal Agreement in 1983, demonstrating mutual commitment and administrative collaboration.

A significant milestone in these relations occurred on June 18, 2013, when President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo was received at the Magistral Palace by the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Fra’ Matthew Festing. The Grand Master paid tribute to the fruitful collaboration and praised the humanitarian initiatives led by the Order in Togo, particularly since the launch of its health programs in the late 1970s.

Humanitarian action in the country is primarily carried out by Ordre de Malte France, which plays a key role in the Togolese healthcare system. Central to this presence is the hospital in Elavagnon, established in 1981, which provides vital services in general medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and maternal care. Integrated into the national health system, the hospital has become a regional reference point for quality care in a rural setting. In addition to the hospital, the Order supports several health centers, dispensaries and a nursery throughout the country, contributing significantly to maternal and child health. Programs in nutrition, training of local staff, and mobile health initiatives further reinforce the Order’s long-term commitment to public health in Togo.
